Emmi Farmer Ambassador Jakob Müller brings together tradition and modernity in agriculture

The Müller family from beautiful Stein in Appenzell pours their heart into their life and work for their operation, maintaining harmony with nature and tradition. The proud Emmi Farmer Ambassadors share their history and passion for agriculture.

The Müller family lives in picturesque Nordstein in Appenzell. Ursula, her husband Jakob and their four children aged 28 to 34 run a traditional dairy farm with 30 cows and around 30 young animals.

“We are from Appenzell and perhaps somewhat special. We appreciate having a clean landscape and local dress. Tradition means a lot to us,” explains Ursula Müller. Aside from farming, the Müller family, along with Prinz, Kira and Özil, also breeds the typical Appenzeller Sennenhunde, or Swiss mountain dogs, also known locally as “Bläss”.

The Müller family farm includes over 28 hectares of grassland for the cows. Their milk is used to make cheese for the Show Dairy. Jakob Müller grew up on this farm and runs the dairy farm with pride. He attaches great importance to the health of the cows and the conservation of nature.

Also known by his nickname “Köbi”, Jakob Müller makes daily contact with his cows a priority. That’s why he still opts for the use of a tie stall, however outdated that might sound to some. While his son may build a free stall in future, the tie stall remains of great importance for Jakob: “For me, a tie stall is just there so I can come into contact with every cow every day and know all their names.”

Köbi is generally open to innovation and also sees technological progress as an opportunity. For example, machines make a lot of work easier. But he believes that the main thing is to be passionate about your work. For him, this is deeply rooted in tradition: “We are from Appenzell, we still have brown cows with horns and it is important to me that the farming community remains as it is for all intents and purposes.”

As Emmi Farmer Ambassadors, the Müllers take pride in their work and are delighted to see other people appreciating Emmi’s products. “It starts with enjoying what you do and putting your heart and soul into it – then everything will work,” says Jakob Müller.

Emmi farmer ambassadors

Our longstanding partnership with our regional dairy farmers has always been particularly important to us: it is characterised by trust, closeness to our origins and quality awareness. Through this close cooperation, we can help to create value in rural regions and remain true to the core of our products, with high-quality and increasingly sustainably produced milk. Together, we create added value and make sustainable dairy farming the norm. Emmi launched the Emmi Farmer Ambassador project in 2018 to further strengthen the partnership and to put the families behind our delicious dairy products front and centre.
