How Emmi Farmer Ambassador Dominique Schmid reconciles agriculture and sustainability
Milk producer Dominique Schmid is taking part in the ‘KlimaStaR Milch’ project. In the Farmer Ambassador profile video, he talks about his motivation and the challenge of reconciling agriculture and sustainability.
Dominique Schmid invests a lot of work into his farm with around 80 cows – so much, in fact, that office work sometimes has to wait. Forage production, breeding, raising calves, owning a farm shop and paying particular attention to the correct use of resources demand quite a lot from the milk producer. Even in winter, there is a lot to do with animal care and breeding.
‘KlimaStaR Milk’ project
But Dominique is happy to make time for a visit from his Emmi employee Peter Meier. Peter is not only Head of Purchasing Milk Organisations and Cream, but also responsible for the ‘KlimaStaR Milk’ project at Emmi.
Together, Dominique and Peter explain what this is all about. The project enables the Swiss dairy industry, together with producers, to test solutions for climate-friendly milk production. The main objective is to reduce greenhouse gases in the dairy sector by 20 per cent within six years.
That does not sound like much, but it is an ambitious undertaking that also means a lot of work for Dominique. ‘In my book, there is no agriculture without sustainability,’ he says, which is why he is happy to take on the extra effort.
Christmas trees and summer holidays
The Emmi Farmer Ambassador finds balance with his friends and family. Every year the Schmid family organises a Christmas tree event, where they invite friends and acquaintances to their woods to get Christmas trees. ‘They are not the most beautiful because they are not cultivated trees,’ says Dominique, ‘but they are the most natural and sustainable’.
Dominique also goes on holiday with his family every year. The biggest challenge is to find a suitable substitute to look after the farm during the holiday. ‘It’s not easy, but my children are only small once and the family is entitled to time with me.’
