Generational change and sustainability on the farm
The Bühlmann family invests a lot of time in their business and its future. They are taking part in the "KlimaStaR Milk" project with their Lügisingen farm as a pilot site.
Every morning at 6 am sharp, Pascal Bühlmann drives to his farm in Rothenburg in the canton of Lucerne. Although he took over the farm from his father over a year ago, his parents continue to support him actively. Alongside her work on the farm, his mother Lucia runs a farm playgroup and regularly welcomes children to the farm. Together, the Bühlmann family is committed to people and animals.
Connected to nature and animal welfare
What Pascal particularly appreciates about his job is the variety and the opportunity to organise his own time. The trained farmer attaches great importance to sustainability and operates a full grazing system across 30 hectares of land so that his 65 dairy cows can spend as much time as possible on the pasture. The seasonal calving of his cows takes place in February and March.

Pilot site in the "KlimaStaR Milk" project
The Lügisingen farm is one of 230 pilot farms taking part in the "KlimaStaR Milk" project. At the end of May, Pascal’s farm hosted a media event followed by a press conference. Numerous politicians, industry representatives and media professionals took part in the "KlimaStaR Milk" media event to discuss the resource project.
By participating in the project, Pascal wants to show the public that milk producers can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and improve the image of milk production. His personal goal in milk production is to obtain as much animal feed as possible from pasture grass and by-products that are unsuitable for human consumption.

Initiative for a climate-friendly and resource-efficient dairy industry
The "KlimaStaR Milk" project is a cross-industry initiative launched in 2022 by Nestlé, Emmi, aaremilch AG, ZMP and AgroCleanTech with support from the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture. The aim of the project is to gain scientifically substantiated insights at a practical level in order to make the Swiss dairy industry more climate-friendly and resource-efficient. On the one hand, the aim is to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from milk production. On the other hand, food competition is also to be reduced by 20 per cent, which means that less food is fed to cows that would also be suitable for humans.
