The time for mulled wine and champagne is over. It’s now about making it through the dark winter days with some get-up-and-go. Why not with milk? Hot milk drinks conjure up warmth on cold days. Below is a range of recipes, from traditional milk with honey to more exotic alternatives.
Memories from childhood days gone by: a glass of hot milk with honey, lovingly prepared by mum. We drank it in bed in the evening, wrapped up in a warm blanket. After that, every child sleeps deeply and soundly.
This feel-good ritual can easily be transferred from the past to the present. Hot milk drinks are particularly good for you in the winter. They help to warm up shivering bodies and provide them with energy. There are also other recipes that are worth trying. Here are a few ideas*:
With white chocolate and egg liqueur
Why not have a little fun in January and skip the calorie counting for once? Melt 100 g white chocolate in 500 ml milk. Then add 40 ml egg liqueur and it’s ready. If you like, decorate with chocolate sprinkles and a little whipped cream. Serves two.
With pumpkin purée and spiced syrup
A drink for connoisseurs who enjoy a little extravagance. Pumpkin spice milk can be a little challenging to make at home, however. First, the spiced syrup: You need maple syrup, cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg and clove powder. Then, the pumpkin purée: Prepare and dice the pumpkin, simmer in water for 30 minutes, then purée. Now mix an espresso with 2 tablespoons spiced syrup in a cup. Heat 3 tablespoons purée with 150 ml milk in a glass, foam with a blender and pour into the cup. Finally, mix a little stiff whipped cream with 2 tablespoons purée, add to the milk and enjoy.
With turmeric and cardamom
There are also exotic milk drinks, such as Golden Milk. Take 200 ml milk, add 1 teaspoon turmeric and a pinch each of ginger powder, cardamom or cinnamon and vanilla pulp. Bring to the boil, stir and simmer for 1 minute. Cool slightly, then add 1 teaspoon honey and a little black pepper. It’s a popular remedy for coughs and colds in India.
With whisky and vanilla
A bedtime drink for adults. Use good quality whisky. To serve two, heat 900 ml milk but do not let it boil. Add 1 pack vanilla sugar, 4 tablespoons honey, 40 ml whisky and a little nutmeg.
With marshmallows and chocolate
Sweet, sweeter, sweetest: For the garnish, toast 4 large marshmallows in the oven at 200 degrees for 2–3 minutes until brown. Whip 50 ml cream until stiff. Melt 40 g chocolate and 2 marshmallows in 250 ml hot milk and mix until thoroughly dissolved. Pour the milk into glasses and garnish with the marshmallows and cream.
